If you’ve noticed a steady increase in the amount of postcards in your daily mail, there’s a reason for it. Apart from the fact that direct mail marketing is an inexpensive and effective way to get your business noticed, it is now easier to target specific neighborhoods, thanks to the United States Postal Service’s Every Door Direct Mail® program.

There are two tiers offered, depending on the size of your business. Smaller businesses may prefer the retail option, which allows you to bring your postcards directly to the post office for mailing–no postage permit is required and you can mail up to 5,000 postcards a day.

For larger businesses or for mailings over 5,000 pieces, the USPS accepts deliveries at a Business Mail Entry Unit.

Benefits of Using EDDM®. Get your message out to every address in your neighborhood, without the cost of paying for outdated lists. Your postal carrier simply includes one postcard in every mailbox on his or her route. Various card sizes allow you to print simple messages or include coupons, menus, maps and more.

Watson Printing Can Help. For smaller companies who are interested in this program, you’ve come to the right place. We can help you with design, layout, printing and even dropping off your cards to the post office. Getting the word out about your business has never been easier.

When you meet a prospective client and hand him or her your card, what does it say about your company? Does it represent your business? Does it impress or gain trust?

Here are a few simple tips and tricks to make your business card work like a small billboard for your business.

1. Choose the Right Paper. Attorneys and doctors prefer traditional cotton-based cover stock, typically Strathmore bright white. They avoid loud colors and glossy paper. No attorney wants to be perceived as slick as coated business card. On the other hand, a glossy card is often the choice of tech companies, marketing firms and others. Still, others prefer raised print business cards, which we can provide.

2. Revisit Your Logo. Company logos are always evolving. In 2008, Wal-Mart spent untold millions of dollars putting a contemporary spin on its logo and changing every sign on its nearly 9,000 storefronts. The goal is to keep your look fresh while strengthening your brand. If you feel your logo is outdated or needs a new look, we can help.

3. Use the Other Side. Why cram everything on the front of your card and leave the back blank? Take advantage of the extra space to be creative. Add additional designs, a color flood coat, a quote that represents your business, or a link to your blog. Some prefer to leave the blank space to write notes on the back of a card. That’s fine, but ask yourself this: Are you sacrificing information that could land you a new client in favor of offering someone space to write a grocery list?

4. Promote Your Social Media Presence. Is your business represented on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ or Instagram? Put those logos and a link to your business pages on these social media platforms. Some people prefer to view your social media sites more than your traditional website. Get the word out to show your social media presence.

5. Use QR Codes. QR codes are great for linking to videos, landing pages and other places on the Internet. Did you know you can create a QR code that will instantly add your contact information into a clients smartphone upon scanning?

One of the points we continue to stress here on the Watson Printing blog is the relationship between online and print advertising. Nowhere do these two essential avenues of marketing go together better than with QR (Quick Response) codes and postcards.

Because smartphones and tablets are so quickly becoming the preference these days over desktop and laptop computers, the opportunity to merge mobile and direct mail gives your typical postcard advertisement the extra zing that could be the difference between winning and losing a new client.

A QR code clearly printed but revealing nothing is like a secret code, we, as adult consumers, need to break. So for example, if a client has moderate interest in your postcard, he or she might not toss your postcard in the recycle bin thanks to the QR code. As long as that postcard remains on a desk, there’s always the chance they’ll call.

What Should My QR Code Link To?

1. A landing page. This is a specific page on your website (or hosted separately) that a client can go to and read more about what you can do for them. Let’s face it: There’s only room for a headline and a few sentences on a typical 4 x 6 mailer. But a QRcode can lead to a page with enough copy on it to make a great argument for why they should use your product or service over your competitors.

2. A registration page. Planning an event or seminar that requires a sign-up? Your QR code can take the client directly to the registration page before he or she forgets.

3. A video. A scanned QR code that leads to a YouTube video can be a winner for your business. People love to watch videos. Sure, they’re mostly cat videos, but if you’re clever enough you may win over a new client.

Need help creating a QR code or postcard campaign? Get in touch and we’ll help you get the most of your direct mail marketing.

Welcome to the new Watson Printing Company blog. I thought we’d start by giving our opinion on a question we’re commonly asked: Will paper become entirely obsolete in the near future?

It’s a question that deserves consideration. After all, advances in technology combined with the rising awareness of living a “green” lifestyle have lessened the need for paper over the years. That said, we don’t see paper going away all that easily, and we’re not alone.

We embrace technology. We’re constantly upgrading our software, computers and copiers. We can’t live without our smartphones and iPads. But we also know that attempting to write with a chunky stylus on a piece of glass doesn’t come close to the smooth precision of writing a thank you note or to-do list with a ballpoint pen. To date, no one has come up with anything to rival the effectiveness of a simple business card.

Why give up paper for electronics when you can have both? That’s why we’re here. We’re traditionalists. Call us crazy, but we don’t expect you’ll be emailing your wedding invitations anytime soon. We love reading e-books if they’re novels, but when it comes to finding a certain paragraph in a non-fiction training manual, nothing’s faster than flipping through the sections with your fingers to find it. I know, we’re so primitive sometimes.

We’re all for going green. We recycle. We don’t print out emails or anything else we can read online unless it’s absolutely necessary. We have no problem paying bills online. Yet sometimes, a business letter with your printed logo sent on your corporate letterhead is necessary. It’s real. It’s tangible. It makes an impact that can’t be ignored or easily deleted. As we said, there’s room for both electronic and printed media. That’s why we don’t see ourselves living in a paperless society anytime soon.

We look forward to posting news, ideas and opinions on this blog in the coming weeks. We’ll feature clever and unique promotional products and show you ways to build your brand through the use of promotional products and printed materials. If you haven’t already, check out our Facebook page and give us a “like.”
